Self-indulgent rant. But here we go.
I guess this applies to any sport, but it’s football season and many of my friends are really into it, so we’ll be using that as the sport in question here.
I don’t get it. =/
I don’t understand how people can enjoy watching a bunch of people chase after a ball, or a hand-egg, or whatever. It’s so completely unrelatable for me. I’ve seen football games and I have a vague understanding of the rules, but that doesn’t help. At the end of the day, I’m still watching everyone get excited over a ball going back and forth.
I’ve always felt that none of these teams represent me in any way, shape, or form. They may represent my school, my hometown, my state, or even my country…but they don’t represent ME as an individual, and that’s kind of all I care about. =/ Is that really selfish of me?
I tried putting this into perspective: what do *I* like? I like books, and video games, and dramatic sci-fi/fantasy TV shows, and comic books, and dogs, and probably other stuff but that’s enough for now. So why do I like all of that? If a football game is just a bunch of men pushing each other and chasing after a ball, then a book is just a bunch of pieces of paper with inky scribbles on it. But a book tells a story, a human experience that I can relate to and that can often make me cry or get me really depressed, which I kind of enjoy. I like books, video games, comic books, and those dramatic shows because of the story. So I guess it’s just easier to say that I like stories. As for dogs?
We’ll get into dogs another time.
Competition doesn’t do anything for me, at least if it’s not a competition that I’m not personally, individually involved with. I like watching people struggle mentally, not physically. I like watching people get really emotional over someone who died. I like it when people realize that they are loved and that they love others. I like stories where people grow and change and have something important to say about life on this planet. And I don’t think spectator sports is where I can get that.
Maybe the reason why people enjoy sports is BECAUSE it has nothing to do with any of that. Sure, there are emotions involved, and it’s about teamwork which is nice, but it’s not personal at all. Maybe most people don’t like it when things get personal. Or spiritual. But I do. That’s what I live for.
Am I wrong? Why do you like sports/football/etc.? I’ve asked this before and I’ve never really been satisfied with the answers. But maybe I just haven’t really listened in the past.

This isn’t part of the “daily” Buffy meme I’ve been doing. I’ll continue that whenever. There are just some things on my mind.
“I was worried because here I am playing Final Fantasy alone in my apartment on my first night back at college when I should be out partying or something, but it’s what I wanted to do, so I did it. I get that now.”
I believe in the connections that cannot be seen. I believe that everyone I love is connected to me and these connections aren’t easily severed. The loneliness gets to me sometimes. But I promise to be strong.
That was my winter song to you.

30 Days of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Day 3: Favorite Song Used in an Episode
I’m a day behind, but I don’t give a shit. There were no directions saying the days have to be consecutive.
“Conversations with Dead People,” episode 7x07, features this song. It was penned by both Angie Hart (its performing artist) and Joss Whedon himself. It works really well in the episode.
30 Days of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Day 2: Favorite Episode
Pic related.
It’s hard to say which episode is my favorite, because I like so many of them. But here’s a run-through of some that I especially love, in no particular order:
